ATTENTION: PLEASE DO NOT SEND IN ORIGINAL DATA!
For an individual tax return extension, please fill out and submit to us an Extension Request Form. The information requested on the form is absolutely essential in order for us to file your extension.Information required includes an estimate of your tax liability. If you believe your tax liability will be similar to your previous year, you may use the amount on line 61 of page 2 of your previous year 1040 form and line 34 on page 2 of your previous year California form 540. You can also simply write, "Use 2010 tax," on the request form and we will fill in the amount.
Changes in income, deductions filing status, etc. can change your tax liability so you may need to have an estimate made by your accountant. If the amount estimated turns out to be significantly lower than the actual tax, the IRS could deny the extension.
Estimating the tax liability also allows you to pay in your tax with the extension so additional penalties and interest will not be assessed. If you would like to pay your tax with the extension, we will provide the instructions. We will be filing most extensions electronically, so you will need to remit the payment separately.
Business Extension forms must arrive to us fully completed by February 15, 2012.
Personal Extension request forms must arrive to us fully completed by March 15, 2012
Remember, an extension gives you more time to file, not more time to pay.
Please send all extension request forms and extension queries and communication to:
We have two types of Client Organizers to help you save time this year. The first is a Word document form that can be filled out on the computer. The second is a tax organizer filled in with your 2010 data. This will be provided to you in PDF form (not able to be edited on your computer) at your request. Please email services@gnjcpas.com to request this organizer.
Corporations due to IRS March 15 - all data must be to us by Feb 15nd.
Individual due to IRS April 16 - all data must be to us by March 15th.
Partnerships due to IRS April 16 - all data must be to us by March 15th.
If the information is received after the cut off dates, your accountant will attempt to have your return completed by the due date, however, an extension may need to be filed. If your return must be prepared by the deadline and the information is not provided per the above, an additional $50 will be charged.
For Individuals
If you are self employed and/or receive other income where taxes are not withheld, you are required to pay your taxes 4 times during the year:
- April 16, 2012
- June 15, 2012
- Sept 17, 2012
- Jan 16, 2013
Nonpayment on these dates may result in penalties. Consequently, if you are filing an extension for your 2011 return, you should contact us concerning paying the first estimated payment by April 16, 2012. Also, you will need to contact us prior to each of the other estimated payment dates if you have not already filed your 2011 return to determine the amounts to pay.
For California Corporations and LLCs
The minimum tax due to California is $800. This is due April 16, 2012 for 2012 returns of calender year end corporations and LLCs. If you have not paid the 2011 California tax and if you are not filing your 2011 corporation/LLC return by March 15, 2012 (Corporations) and April 16, 2012 (LLCs), call us and we will provide the voucher with which to remit payment to avoid additional penalties.
Contributions to traditional and Roth IRAs as well as Health Savings accounts must be made by April 16, 2012 in order to be deductible on the 2011 tax return.
Contributions to SEP IRAs can be delayed until the due date of the 2011 tax return including extensions in order to be deductible on the 2011 tax return.
